Using Color to Create Space
By Leon Tuberman
You may be surprised how much you can do with just the simple use of color, there are a number of different ways that color can actually bring a room to life and make it look larger or smaller. This mainly has to do with depth perception. Darker colors tend to make things appear slightly closer making smaller spaces have the appearance of being closed in while lighter colors tend to make spaces look larger than they are. There are a number of ways that you can use color, even dark colors to make your decorating scheme and your rooms stand out. The first thing is to consider neutral tones. These are great for smaller areas such as bathrooms, where you do not want everything to be stark white but do not want to get too far off the neutral base. You can easily strip several different shades and types of neutral colors in order to create a perfect space while still staying in a limited color range. If you are looking to open a space up consider using the same color throughout two connecting rooms. This causes the space to open up and makes it flow from one room to another lending a greater air of space. This works well in connecting rooms, great rooms, or in rooms that are within the same field of vision. If you are looking to add depth to your room consider the option of layering colors. This is found in techniques such as sponging and feathering. It is basically layering a single color on top of another color allowing both colors to appear and in turn adds a layer of depth to the room which did not previous exist. You can also use contrasting or complementary colors on different parts of the room, for example a solid color wall with a contrasting color door or door frame to draw the eye in. This makes the room appear larger because it changes the depth perception of the room. The use of accents should not be ignored. The walls, doors and artwork are not the only things, which add to the room. The furnishings and the accent pieces also create a great deal of the visual depth that can make a room significantly larger. These can also incorporate less traditional or bright favorite colors that would not work well in larger areas of a room décor scheme. Using color to add depth to a room, to accent and draw attention is one way to create the perfect space, no matter what its size. You can easily stay with neutral tones and add accents or use solid colors to take a room from ordinary to a room that gives the illusion of space as well as making your feel comfortable and warm. You can layer colors, use colors to attract attention and even use them to create a flow between several different rooms to create the appearance of an even greater amount of space.
