Color Characteristics - How they effect your décor
By Leon Tuberman
Colors have characteristics that can have an effect on the physical and emotion response of individuals who view them. Some colors are considered warm; others cold and this can have a significant impact on the room itself. This is why it is important to know the characteristics of colors in order to determine if a particular color is best used as an accent or as a primary color for the room. Hot colors or warm colors are going to be reds, oranges and yellows. These do have their place but they may not be appropriate for all rooms. Yellows can be bright and cheerful making them great for kitchens and dining rooms while oranges and reds can make the room feel uncomfortably warm especially when using the kitchen. Reds can increase heart rate and blood pressure and are not considered to be restful color so should be used sparingly and in rooms that energy needs to be or rooms that you do not want to be classified or considered as restful. Oranges are hard to use as straight orange however, there are a number of different variations that can actually be peaceful and made wonderful additions to bedrooms, living rooms and bathrooms. Greens and blues are cool colors and are often used as base colors for living rooms, bathrooms, and bedrooms. They are relaxing and can provide a sense of peace. They can also make the room very cold feeling so this should also be carefully considered when using blue. Purple is a great in darker shades as an accent and a lovely alternative to the cooler blues and greens. It provides a bit of warmth to the cool colors of blue while still maintaining the cool and calm feeling. The neutral colors are the backbone of any color palette. This is because they can easily be used for anything, walls, furnishings, and carpets and they go with any colors allow you to experiment with all your favorite colors. Black however, because of the level of depth it can create should actually be used as an accent to draw the eye into the room rather than being used to overpower a space. Tans, creams, and other neutral shades make great anchors for the entire room. Using colors and knowing their characteristics is one way to ensure that all the colors in your décor fit together in order to provide you with a color schematic that is going to bring exactly what you want to your room and to your home. Warm colors for rooms that you want to inspire and create a sense of energy and cool colors for rooms that you want to provide a peaceful and restful location. Consider a combination such as a warmer ranged cool color such as lavender, which provides the benefits of both warm and cool colors. Consider using a variety of accent pieces in order to bring in favorite colors that would not do well on walls or as main colors.
