Closets on a Budget
By Leon Tuberman
Need more storage space in your home but you have a tight budget? The solution may be found at your local dollar store. You can find equipment here to expand the closet space available in the closets you already have! Let’s take a look at how to do this for a child’s closet as well as one for yourself. Closets for Kids You can bring order to the chaos which is typical of a child’s room by setting up a closet with totable bins for storing small items, baskets which children will enjoy using and roll-in shelving. Idea #1: Buy for Color You can set up a color scheme for your child’s closet. This will help them organize their things. Use snap-on hooks which come on brightly colored cords. Idea #2: Organize Keepsakes You can create storage on the inside of the closet door both for storage and to display items. You can mount memo board where children can reach for photos and their artwork. Idea #3: Use Wall Space You can sore crayons and markers in a basket in the closet, with a roll of paper mounted on the closet wall – this gives you child easy access when it’s time to draw. Idea #4: Multiply for Fun You can convert four of those ubiquitous plastic crates into a single toy container which can be kept out for play then stored on a closet shelf afterwards. How can you do all of this? Simple – zip ties and a bungee cord with hooks to use as a handle. A Closet for an Adult You can organize your own chaos with bins, baskets, hangable pockets and other organizers. You can use these to store all of the greeting cards, stationary, and the other things which tend to quickly clutter your own room or office. Idea #1: Adapt Basics You can turn common household items to a multitude of other uses. With a little stitching and some grommets from your local hardware store, you can create hangable pockets for organizing small items out of some old kitchen towels. With the holidays coming up, you may find a ribbon dispenser a useful addition to your closet as well – you can make one out of a paper towel holder. Idea #2: Gather Together Keep organized by sorting items by category. Keep stationary on a wall rack over your desk – you’ll find this gets you caught up on your correspondence in no time! Keep pens, pencils and small paintbrushes together in metal bins near your desk and you’ll never have to dig for them again. Idea #3: Rethink Function With the addition of folders, you can make a great in/out box out of a dish rack. This is a great organizational tool. Idea #4: Label Everything You can use any extra luggage tags you have lying around into labels for easy organization. Dress them up with fabric swatches and paint chips for a chic look – self adhesive luggage tags make it easy! |
