Choosing a High Quality File Cabinet

By Leon Tuberman

A filing cabinet is not just a piece of furniture to store files; it is part of the decoration of your home or office and can be used for a variety of different purposes. There are some things to look for when choosing a file cabinet; these are going to be the file size, the number of drawers, and what the quality of your file cabinet the first thing to look at is how the file cabinet is put together. You are going to want to look at the actual make of the file cabinet. Is it made with cam lock or put together with dovetail joints and is the cabinet made of wood veneer or solid wood.

While file cabinets can be made of metal if you are looking for something that is going to be an elegant addition to your home or office as well as being versatile you are going to look for more than metal. It is important to note that particleboard is actually classified as a solid wood. This means you should check out the actual construction of the file cabinet to make sure that it is made out of the appropriate materials. The weight of the file cabinet can also help to tell you what it is made of solid wood is going to be significantly heavier than even particleboard.

The direction of the grain is going to be what tells you the difference between veneer and real wood. Veneer can be a good way to provide a quality look for less money since these pieces are often less expensive than pieces that are completely composed of natural hard wood, they are also usually lighter and easier to manage. Drawers should use dovetail joints as well when it comes to quality construction. You may want to avoid drawers that are put together with cams since they may not be strong enough to handle the amount of weight that a file cabinet can see when fully loaded.

You are going to want to check to make sure that the hardware also is function and is going to stand up to what you want to use your file cabinet for. The first thing to do is to check the glide system, the slides that move the drawers in and out to make sure that these move freely and check to see what their weight limit is and how the balance under weight. This is something essential on larger cabinets. Finally, you are going to want to look at the locks. There are some cabinets which the lock stops the entire slide system preventing the drawers from opening and then somewhere you lock only a particular drawer. In some cases, you may want to be able to lock each of the drawers individually. When looking into high quality wood file cabinets it is a good idea to purchase your cabinets completely assembled rather than in pieces and stay away from self-assembly.
